It was with great sadness that we were informed of the abrupt death of Professor Olivier Picard (1940-2023) who passed away on September 1, 2023 surrounded by friends and colleagues in his beloved Thasos.

Underwater archaeological research in Kasos 2022-2023 | Institute of Historical Studies, Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity
As part of the second three-year research project (2022-2024), the Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project is excited to announce its fifth year of exploration in Kasos Island, commencing this October 2023. The project, conducted in collaboration with the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and the Institute of Historical Research of the National Research Foundation (Scientific Coordinator Charikleia Papageorgiadou), is led by the archaeologists Dionysios Evangelistis (EUA) and Xanthie Argiris (IHR/NHRF).

The Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Department of Archaeology at Ghent University are delighted to announce an upcoming International Conference entitled "GIS in Crete: Archaeological Questions and Computational Answers", which will take place in Athens on 30-31 May 2024. Τhe first phase of the interdisciplinary, non-destructive scientific investigation of the Hunt Frieze that adorns the façade of the Tomb of Philip II took place at the archaeological site of Aigai (UNESCO monument), from 8 to 27 March 2023. The study is part of the research project ReVis, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI).

4th Summer School on Ancient Greek and Roman Numismatics

Award “Avrilia Komninou” of the Academy of Athens for 2022 to Anastasia Yangaki, Research Director at IHR/NHRF
Anastasia Yangaki, Research Director at the Section of Byzantine Research of the Institute of Historical Research, received by the Academy of Athens the “Avrilia Komninou” Award of the Section of Letters and Fine Arts, for her study entitled: “'Speaking Ceramics': The Bacini as Containers of Hidden Messages and Expressions of Memory”.

The American Numismatic Society honored Dr. Sophia D. Kremydi, Research Director (SGRA/IHR), with the 2021 Huntington Award
Dr. Sophia Kremydi, Research Director at the Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity of the Institute of Historical Research, was bestowed the highest honor of the American Numismatic Society, the 2021 Archer Milton Huntington Medal Award, for outstanding contribution to Numismatics. The medal was presented by the Society’s President, Dr. Ute Wartenberg, at a ceremony that took place in Athens on the 15th of June 2022. After the presentation Dr. Kremydi delivered the Silvia Mani Hurter Lecture on “Issuing Authority and Legal Tender in the Hellenistic World”.

Completion of the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940
As part of the research project “Database of German military and paramilitary units in Greece 1941-1944/45” and within the framework of an international collaboration between the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the University of Osnabrück and the Greek National Center for Social Research (EKKE), the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940 is now being created.
