International Conference «GIS in Crete: Archaeological Questions and Computational Answers» - Call for papers
The Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Department of Archaeology at Ghent University are delighted to announce an upcoming International Conference entitled "GIS in Crete: Archaeological Questions and Computational Answers", which will take place in Athens on 30-31 May 2024. We cordially encourage researchers interested in participating in the conference to submit abstracts in English (maximum 250 words) for a 20-minute presentation by 27 October 2023.

JANE Project “EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) participates in the implementation of the “EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise”. Within a 2-year period, JANE aims to establish seven new Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in the cancer field, able to function effectively, building on previous and ongoing EU networking experiences, and finding solutions rooted in the European oncology community. Health care networking can be a privileged hallmark of the EU, having the potential to target the health of half a million citizens in a highly coordinated fashion. The project is coordinated by Fondatione IRCCS, Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Italy. Sixteen EU countries, represented by 20 partners and 16 affiliated entities, participate and it is funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency, EU4Health Programme (Grant agreement:101075328).

Press Release | The Hunt Frieze of the Tomb of Philip II at Aigai (Vergina): Investigation of ancient colour using cutting-edge technologies.

Τhe first phase of the interdisciplinary, non-destructive scientific investigation of the Hunt Frieze that adorns the façade of the Tomb of Philip II took place at the archaeological site of Aigai (UNESCO monument), from 8 to 27 March 2023. The study is part of the research project ReVis, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI).

UPCAST Project “Universal Platform Components for Safe Fair Interoperable Data Exchange, Monetisation and Trading”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation participates in the funded European Project “Universal Platform Components for Safe Fair Interoperable Data Exchange, Monetisation and Trading” (Acronym: UPCAST), which provides a set of universal, trustworthy, transparent and user-friendly data market plugins for the automation of data sharing and processing agreements between businesses, public administrations and citizens. The plugins developed will enable actors in the common European data spaces to design and deploy data exchange and trading operations. NHRF is going to pilot privacy-preserving biomedical and genomic data sharing as well as integration of heterogeneous genomic data from different sources. UPCAST project has received funding from the European Union´s Horizon Research and Innovation Actions under Grant Agreement nº 101093216.

Twin4Promis “Twinning for Excellence in Research, Training and Innovation in Protein Misfolding Diseases”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation is coordinating the funded European Project “Twinning for Excellence in Research, Training and Innovation in Protein Misfolding Diseases” (Acronym: Twin4Promis), which aims to create a new hub of excellence in research, training of young researchers and innovation in scientific fields related to protein misfolding diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and obesity. Laser induced nanojet functionalization of two-dimensional materials for sensing and energy harvesting applications | LANAFUSEHA project
Funded by the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the LANAFUSEHA project aims to advance 2D materials by adding to them novel functionalities for improved energy-harvesting and sensing applications. It proposes to exploit the nanometer precision of a photonic nanojet to functionalize 2D materials by laser. The proposed technique entails scalable technology with low technological risk and commercial viability, enabling the creation of new devices and materials for use in a wide range of industries.

Neuron-specific proteasome activation exerts cell non-autonomous protection against amyloid-beta (Aβ) proteotoxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans
Dr Niki Chondrogianni (Research Director, ICB/NHRF) and her group have published a pioneer study in the peer reviewed scientific journal Redox Biology that reveals for the first time that the proteasome system is subjected to cell non-autonomous regulation.

“RESEARCH CREATE-INNOVATE” AlphaSyn
«Systematic development and commercial exploitation of novel aggregation inhibitors of the protein α-synuclein»
The AlphaSyn project is developing new and effective small-molecule inhibitors of the neurotoxic aggregation of the protein α-synuclein (αSyn). These inhibitors are discovered via screening of (1) large combinatorial libraries of short cyclic peptides and (2) natural product libraries from Greek marine organisms. The most effective inhibitors of αSyn aggregation and neurotoxicity will be developed with the ultimate goal of developing lead compounds with potentially therapeutic properties against Parkinson’s disease and, in addition, an innovative neuroprotective nutritional supplement promoting the kinetic and cognitive function of elderly people.

Research Project PhoRTnano (ΑΤΤΡ4-0321281) Photocatalytic reactors for water and liquid waste purification with immobilized photocatalysts on micro/nanopatterned surfaces
The goal of this project is the development of low-cost and high-efficiency reactors for water and liquid waste purification, via organic pollutant destruction, based on novel photocatalytic materials and coatings, which will be developed and evaluated in terms of their photocatalytic activity.

“Strengthening the potential of algal proteins for food colouring and fortification using high-pressure technologies” (PRESSION) ANSO Project No. ANSO-CR-PP-2021-01
Algal phycobiliproteins (PBPs) are increasingly recognised as safe and affordable, highly bioactive natural food colourants in place of carcinogenic chemical ones. The Institute of Chemical Biology {ICB/NHRF), participates in the project "PRESSION", which aims at the use of high pressure technologies for the colour preservation and stability during storage of food colourants purified from cyanobacteria and red algae, to meet the challenge for their greater industrial use.

The American Numismatic Society honored Dr. Sophia D. Kremydi, Research Director (SGRA/IHR), with the 2021 Huntington Award
Dr. Sophia Kremydi, Research Director at the Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity of the Institute of Historical Research, was bestowed the highest honor of the American Numismatic Society, the 2021 Archer Milton Huntington Medal Award, for outstanding contribution to Numismatics. The medal was presented by the Society’s President, Dr. Ute Wartenberg, at a ceremony that took place in Athens on the 15th of June 2022. After the presentation Dr. Kremydi delivered the Silvia Mani Hurter Lecture on “Issuing Authority and Legal Tender in the Hellenistic World”.

HFRI Scholarship for PhD candidate of TPCI/NHRF George Chatzigiannakis
George Chatzigiannakis (PhD candidate) who is preparing his doctoral dissertation at TPCI/NHRF under the supervision of the Senior Researcher Dr. Maria Kandyla, received a scholarship from HFRI in the context of the 3rd HFRI Scholarship Announcement for Doctoral Candidates. The topic of his doctoral dissertation is "Development of micro / nanostructured electronic/optoelectronic devices with laser processing methods" and aims at the development of electronic and optoelectronic devices (photodetectors, LEDs) with advanced features, combining laser treatment methods with traditional and emerging materials.

The impact of ionic liquid loading in three-dimensional carbon nanotube networks on the separation of CO₂ /CH₄ fluid mixtures: Insights from molecular simulations
The postdoctoral collaborator Dr. Ioannis Skarmoutsos and the Associate Researcher of TPCI/NHRF Dr. Emmanuel Klontzas are co-authors of the above publication in the prestigious Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2021, 125, 24, 13508-13522.

Controlled chemical functionalization toward 3D-2D carbon nanohorn-MoS₂ heterostructures with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for protons reduction
The postdoctoral fellow Dr. Antonia Kagkoura and the Research Director of TPCI/NHRF Dr. Nikos Tagmatarchis are co-authors of the above publication in Advanced Functional Materials 2021, (vol. 31, pp. 2105287), the leading journal in the field of Materials Science. The publication is an international collaboration of the TPCI/NHRF with a world-renowned research team from the University of Zaragoza (Spain), which specializes in the morphological analysis of nanostructured materials by electron microscopy.

"RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE" 2nd CYCLE | ΒΙΟΚΑRΕΤRΑ
The National Hellenic Research Foundation participates in the research project ΒΙΟΚΑRΕΤRΑ "Identification of genomic and transcriptomic prognostic bio-signatures in head and neck cancer". The BIOKARETRA project is in the context of translational research that aims to identify and validate prognostic and predictive biomarkers for head and neck cancer.

Completion of the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940
As part of the research project “Database of German military and paramilitary units in Greece 1941-1944/45” and within the framework of an international collaboration between the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the University of Osnabrück and the Greek National Center for Social Research (EKKE), the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940 is now being created.

Intercalation phenomena in kaolinite: New insights by vibrational spectroscopy
The postgraduate study of Ms. Fevronia Andreou was implemented in the TPCI/NHRF (under the supervision of G. New edition of the IHR/NHRF, "Entangled histories and collective identity: Narratives of the Chios massacre (1822)", by Maria Christina Chatziioannou
The Chios Massacre in 1822 constitutes a major historiographical challenge; it was a sudden and brief incident within the span of the Greek Revolution that attracted the attention of philhellenes throughout the world, as well as the involvement of various institutions.

New edition of the IHR/NHRF, Ceramics in plain sight: The bacini of the churches of Crete. "Reflections" of the late medieval and the early modern material culture of the island, Volume Ι, The Regional Unit of Chania, by Anastasia G. Yangaki
The volume presents the immured glazed vessels (the bacini) located on the façades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Chania. It comprises the first part of a larger project which will gather similar data from the other regions of Crete.

Incorporation of Peltier coolers on perovskite solar cells
Dr. Andreas Kaltzoglou, Associate Researcher of the TPCI/NHRF, was invited as speaker at the international conference Nanotexnology2021 held on 3-10 July 2021 in Thessaloniki. The funded project of the TPCI/NHRF entitled "Chemically modified MoS₂ with organic recognition motifs as electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of ions and (bio)molecules” was successfully completed on June 30th by the post-doctoral researchers Dr. Anastasios Stergiou and Dr. Christina Stangel, in collaboration with the Research Director, Dr. Nikos Tagmatarchis.

The Associate Researcher of the TPCI/NHRF Dr. Andreas Kaltzoglou is co-author of the above publication in the international journal of the field of materials synthesis and physical chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Physics, in collaboration with NCSR "Demokritos", the Department of Physics of the University of Athens and the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.

Reversible multilayered vesicle-like structures with fluid hydrophobic and interpolyelectrolyte lay
Dr. Athanasios Skandalis (former PhD candidate at TPCI/NHRF and current Postdoctoral Fellow at Imperial College London) and the Research Director of TPCI/NHRF Dr. Asterios (Stergios) Pispas are co-authors of the aforementioned publication in the prestigious International Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. The publication is a result of the international collaboration of the TPCI/NHRF with: the Charles University and the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of Prague, the Julich Centre for Neutron Scattering@MLZ and the Abo Academi University.

New publication by the IHR/NHRF entitled Byzantine Authors and their Times [Research Series 8], Athens 2021, edited by Vassiliki Ν. Vlyssidou
In the present volume, historians and literacy scholars, studying sources dating from the 5th to the 14th century and focusing on issues relating to literary expression, ideology and society, highlight the ways in which Byzantine authors perceived and presented events and situations, which for some belonged to the distant past, while for others constituted personal experiences.

Modulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system by marine natural products
Dr. Chondrogianni along with M. Vasilopoulou, Ph.D. candidate, participated in this publication in the prestigious journal Redox Biology, in collaboration with Assistant Professor E. Ioannou and Professor V. Roussis of the Department of Pharmacy of NKUA.

Network analysis in aged C. elegans reveals candidate regulatory genes of ageing
Dr. N. Chondrogianni from the ICB/NHRF, along with the scientific colleague F. Aktypi and Dr. N. Papaevgeniou, in collaboration with Mr. K. Voutetakis and Dr. A. Chatziioannou and Dr. T. Grune participated in the scientific paper, published in the prestigious journal Biogerontology.

Effects of Fungal Beta-Glucan on Health - A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
Doctoral candidate M. Vlassopoulou and Dr. V. Pletsa from the ICB/NHRF published the aforementioned review article in Food & Function journal, in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens (G.Zervakis, Professor) and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of Harokopio University (Ass. Prof. A. Kyriacou and M. Yannakoulia). The article was developed in the framework of the implementation of the FUNglucan project (RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE).

Adjusting the energy of interfacial states in organic photovoltaics for maximum efficiency
Dr. Christos Chochos (ICB/NHRF) participates in the aforementioned scientific paper published in Nature Communications and developed in collaboration with the most prestigious international universities. Conjugated polymer developed by the research team of Dr. Chistos Chochos and Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou at NHRF was combined with small organic molecules and led to the photophysical study of the decay of excitons at their interface in organic photovoltaic devices.
