Laboratory of Digital Historical Cartography at the Institute of Historical Research
The Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (IHR/NHRF) launches a Laboratory of Digital Historical Cartography. The new Laboratory, utilizing the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), aims to produce original, primarily digital, thematic maps, which will present information from diverse historical and archaeological sources in a documented, comprehensible, and aesthetically refined manner, with the capability to cover the entire chronological spectrum of Greek history.

INSTRUCT-EL Symposium on Structural Biology | 01.10.2024
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), organizes the INSTRUCT-EL Structural Biology Symposium, which will take place at the Athens Conservatory building (Aris Garoufalis Hall).
The main objective of the Symposium is to celebrate the entry of Greece as a full member of ESFRI Landmark INSTRUCT-ERIC and at the same time to inform all stakeholders about Structural Biology and its applications.
The Symposium is addressed to Greeks interested in the field of Structural Biology, Decision Makers, Funders and End Users.

Joint postdoctoral fellowship for 2025-2026 in Hellenic Studies offered by the CHS & the Institute of Historical Research
Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) and the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens offer a joint residential postdoctoral fellowship for the 2025-2026 academic year.
The program aims to support researchers in the areas of ancient history, epigraphy, numismatics, and classical archaeology (especially color studies, iconography, funerary archaeology and GIS) and whose project would benefit from use of both the CHS and IHR infrastructure as well as access to material in and around Athens (e.g. archives, artifacts, archaeological sites).

The National Hellenic Research Foundation participates in the European Heritage Days 2024 with the screening of the documentary "Diving in Aegean History"
The documentary presents the first systematic research of Kasos island marine area, which until recently has been archaeologically uncharted. During the research project, ten shipwrecks were identified as well as a large number of individual finds (vases, amphorae, etc.). The maritime archaeological research confirmed the important position of Kasos island in the Aegean passages and enriched maritime history of the south-eastern Aegean. The screening will take place on 29.09 at 12.30 p.m. at Mikrokosmos Cinema and will be complemented with lectures by contributors to the maritime archaeological research in Kasos.

International workshop “Novel leads and drugs for vector borne diseases: Targets and off targets (toxicity and ecotoxicity) and mechanism of action” | 19-20.09.2024
Organised in the context of the COST ACTION 2111-OneHealthdrugs – “One Health drugs against parasitic vector borne diseases in Europe and beyond” https://onehealthdrugs.com/.
The workshop seeks to provide up to date information and integration strategy on sustainable drug discovery for vector borne diseases (VBDs). Special emphasis will also be given to new targets for VBDs and methods to study their engagement as well as on biodegradability and toxicity aspects pinpointing the effect on the environment.
The event is open to PhD, young innovators and senior scientists from both academia and pharma.

As part of the second three-year research project (2022-2024), the Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project is excited to announce its fifth year of exploration in Kasos Island, commencing this October 2023. The project, conducted in collaboration with the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and the Institute of Historical Research of the National Research Foundation (Scientific Coordinator Charikleia Papageorgiadou), is led by the archaeologists Dionysios Evangelistis (EUA) and Xanthie Argiris (IHR/NHRF).

International Conference «GIS in Crete: Archaeological Questions and Computational Answers» - Call for papers
The Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Department of Archaeology at Ghent University are delighted to announce an upcoming International Conference entitled "GIS in Crete: Archaeological Questions and Computational Answers", which will take place in Athens on 30-31 May 2024. We cordially encourage researchers interested in participating in the conference to submit abstracts in English (maximum 250 words) for a 20-minute presentation by 27 October 2023.

JANE Project “EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) participates in the implementation of the “EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise”. Within a 2-year period, JANE aims to establish seven new Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in the cancer field, able to function effectively, building on previous and ongoing EU networking experiences, and finding solutions rooted in the European oncology community. Health care networking can be a privileged hallmark of the EU, having the potential to target the health of half a million citizens in a highly coordinated fashion. The project is coordinated by Fondatione IRCCS, Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Italy. Sixteen EU countries, represented by 20 partners and 16 affiliated entities, participate and it is funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency, EU4Health Programme (Grant agreement:101075328).

Press Release | The Hunt Frieze of the Tomb of Philip II at Aigai (Vergina): Investigation of ancient colour using cutting-edge technologies.

Τhe first phase of the interdisciplinary, non-destructive scientific investigation of the Hunt Frieze that adorns the façade of the Tomb of Philip II took place at the archaeological site of Aigai (UNESCO monument), from 8 to 27 March 2023. The study is part of the research project ReVis, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI).

UPCAST Project “Universal Platform Components for Safe Fair Interoperable Data Exchange, Monetisation and Trading”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation participates in the funded European Project “Universal Platform Components for Safe Fair Interoperable Data Exchange, Monetisation and Trading” (Acronym: UPCAST), which provides a set of universal, trustworthy, transparent and user-friendly data market plugins for the automation of data sharing and processing agreements between businesses, public administrations and citizens. The plugins developed will enable actors in the common European data spaces to design and deploy data exchange and trading operations. NHRF is going to pilot privacy-preserving biomedical and genomic data sharing as well as integration of heterogeneous genomic data from different sources. UPCAST project has received funding from the European Union´s Horizon Research and Innovation Actions under Grant Agreement nº 101093216.

Twin4Promis “Twinning for Excellence in Research, Training and Innovation in Protein Misfolding Diseases”
The National Hellenic Research Foundation is coordinating the funded European Project “Twinning for Excellence in Research, Training and Innovation in Protein Misfolding Diseases” (Acronym: Twin4Promis), which aims to create a new hub of excellence in research, training of young researchers and innovation in scientific fields related to protein misfolding diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and obesity. On 23.03.2023, the Kick-off meeting of Twin4Promis and a Scientific Symposium took place at the NHRF, where the scientific community and the wider society were intoduced to the Project.

4th Summer School on Ancient Greek and Roman Numismatics

HFRI Scholarship for PhD candidate of TPCI/NHRF George Chatzigiannakis
George Chatzigiannakis (PhD candidate) who is preparing his doctoral dissertation at TPCI/NHRF under the supervision of the Senior Researcher Dr. Maria Kandyla, received a scholarship from HFRI in the context of the 3rd HFRI Scholarship Announcement for Doctoral Candidates. The topic of his doctoral dissertation is "Development of micro / nanostructured electronic/optoelectronic devices with laser processing methods" and aims at the development of electronic and optoelectronic devices (photodetectors, LEDs) with advanced features, combining laser treatment methods with traditional and emerging materials.

"RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE" 2nd CYCLE | ΒΙΟΚΑRΕΤRΑ
The National Hellenic Research Foundation participates in the research project ΒΙΟΚΑRΕΤRΑ "Identification of genomic and transcriptomic prognostic bio-signatures in head and neck cancer". The BIOKARETRA project is in the context of translational research that aims to identify and validate prognostic and predictive biomarkers for head and neck cancer.

Completion of the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940
As part of the research project “Database of German military and paramilitary units in Greece 1941-1944/45” and within the framework of an international collaboration between the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), the University of Osnabrück and the Greek National Center for Social Research (EKKE), the first digital map of Greece within its administrative boundaries of 1940 is now being created.

Intercalation phenomena in kaolinite: New insights by vibrational spectroscopy
The postgraduate study of Ms. Fevronia Andreou was implemented in the TPCI/NHRF (under the supervision of G. Chryssikos), in the framework of the collaboration of the TPCI and the Interinstitutional Postgraduate Program "Microsystems and Nanostructures" of the National Technical University of Athens.

Prostate Cancer Biomarkers: From diagnosis to prognosis and precision-guided therapeutics (Review)
The researcher of the ICB/NHRF V. Zoumpourlis and his colleague, Postdoc M. Adamaki, published the aforementioned review in the Pharmacology & Therapeutics journal.

Effective DNA damage response after acute but not chronic immune challenge: SARS-CoV-2 vaccine versus Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
The aforementioned study was recently published in the scientific journal Clinical Immunology by Dr. Vasilis Souliotis, ICB/NHRF, in collaboration with Professor of Pathology and Rheumatology of the School of Medicine (University of Athens), Petros Sfikakis.

New edition of the IHR/NHRF, "Entangled histories and collective identity: Narratives of the Chios massacre (1822)", by Maria Christina Chatziioannou
The Chios Massacre in 1822 constitutes a major historiographical challenge; it was a sudden and brief incident within the span of the Greek Revolution that attracted the attention of philhellenes throughout the world, as well as the involvement of various institutions.

New edition of the IHR/NHRF, Ceramics in plain sight: The bacini of the churches of Crete. "Reflections" of the late medieval and the early modern material culture of the island, Volume Ι, The Regional Unit of Chania, by Anastasia G. Yangaki
The volume presents the immured glazed vessels (the bacini) located on the façades of numerous churches in the regional unit of Chania. It comprises the first part of a larger project which will gather similar data from the other regions of Crete.

Incorporation of Peltier coolers on perovskite solar cells
Dr. Andreas Kaltzoglou, Associate Researcher of the TPCI/NHRF, was invited as speaker at the international conference Nanotexnology2021 held on 3-10 July 2021 in Thessaloniki. The title of the lecture was: "Incorporation of Peltier coolers on perovskite solar cells”, written by D. N. Kossyvakis, E. Christopoulos, V. Raptis, E. V. Christoforou, P. Falaras, A. Kaltzoglou.

Dr. Christos Chochos (ICB/NHRF) participates in the aforementioned scientific paper published in Nature Communications and developed in collaboration with the most prestigious international universities. Conjugated polymer developed by the research team of Dr. Chistos Chochos and Dr. Vasilis Gregoriou at NHRF was combined with small organic molecules and led to the photophysical study of the decay of excitons at their interface in organic photovoltaic devices.

"RESEARCH-CREATE-INNOVATE" project : CLOUDSCREEN
The National Hellenic Research Foundation currently participates in the research project CLOUDSCREEN that aims to develop a new generation "one-stop-shop- platform (CloudScreen) for drug repositioning and repurposing in precision medicine. Combining the reasoning skills of artificial and human intelligence, the platform empowers efficacy and toxicity prediction, evaluation, and validation for the repurposed drugs.
