Open Access

The "K.T. Dimaras" Library promotes free and unrestricted access to knowledge and supports that unhindered flow and exchange of scholarly information increases scientific progress and improves its impact on the global researcher’s community and society at large.

Open Access (OA) is defined as free access to scholarly information (published and raw data) without any economical, legal, or technical barrier. European Union, national and international research funders encourage the publication of scholarly articles in open access journals. The library actively supports Open Access initiatives to facilitate the dissemination of scholarly knowledge.

Open Access Routes

There are two main routes to open access publishing; the open access journals and the open access repositories or open archives and these are described as such:

  • Gold route

    - Gold route or full open or gold access journals are those that all the published scholarly articles are open and freely available to the public. Publishing in these journals is subject to Article Processing Charges, and the cost is covered either by the author and his/her institution or by the research funder.

    - Hybrid scientific journals adopt a dual-publishing model, encompassing both open access and subscription-based access to scientific publications. Open access publication in hybrid journals is subject to a publishing cost known as (Article Processing Charges, APCs).

  • Green route

The green route of open access involves the authors self-archiving their scientific publications in an institutional or subject repository. Additionally, authors should consult the publisher's policies regarding the embargo period of their publications. For publications funded by European Union programs, there is a provision for a 6-month embargo period in Natural Sciences, Technology, and Medicine disciplines, and a 12-month embargo period for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Open Access Services

Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (Heal-Link) has signed agreements with various publishers to obtain discounts on Article Processing Charges (APCs) and NHRF, as a member, benefits from these discounts on full free access.

Further information regarding available agreements by publisher, participation methods, and discount rates is available on the Heal-Link's website (https://scholarly.heal-link.gr/guide/#jagiellonian).

Sherpa Romeo is an online resource that aggregates and presents publisher and journal open access policies from around the world. Every registered publisher or journal held in Romeo is carefully reviewed and analysed by our specialist team who provide summaries of self-archiving permissions and conditions of rights given to authors on a journal-by-journal basis where possible.

The policy information provided through this service primarily aims to serve the academic research community. Since the service launched over 15 years ago, publisher policies and the open access sector have changed a lot. Open access policy can be complex and varies according to geographical location, the institution, and the various routes to open access — all of which affects how and where you can publish your research.

Index of eligible Open Access journals

The index of eligible Open Access journals is a tool which checks whether there is a possibility of publishing in scientific journals of publishers who cooperate with HEAL-Link. Users may search for the journal title or select one of the main types of support, that is journals with waived APCs and journals with discounted APCs. At the same time, there are specific eligibility terms and conditions that should be taken into account for each journal and publisher.

It should be noted that this index is based on journal lists provided by publishers for the current year. The Unit cannot be held accountable if the publishers add or remove journal titles throughout the year. In such case, please contact scholarly [at] heal-link.gr.
