The Short Light Wavelengths and Applications Laboratory was established in 1983 as "Laser Laboratory". It advances interdisciplinary research in fundamental and applied Physics and technology, Photonics, Engineering, Dynamics of Nano and Bio-systems, Space Sciences, and Biophysics. The Laboratory's current research directions are:

  1. Connectivity of 2D Topology with optical, electric, magnetic, and biological functionalities.
  2. Size-dependent physical interactions at the nanoscale (molecular confinement, semiconductors, electric, magnetic).

Technological applications focus on designing and constructing fully automated control systems and devices, software development, and integration in the laboratory environment, including state-of-the-art laser micromachining systems, vacuum, acoustic, optical, and microwave technologies, and implementation. To accomplish its tasks, the Laboratory applies unique characterization tools and techniques, including UV-VIS, Vacuum Ultraviolet, Microwave and Mass Spectroscopies, Nanoindentation, Conductive, Electric, Magnetic, Thermal-AFM, and Optical Microscopies.

Current applications involve:

  1. Stimulus-perception laws of cells.
  2. Complexity, hierarchy, and biophysics of cancer cells.
  3. Microwave spectroscopy, technology, and applications.
