B6. GREEK PAINTERS AFTER THE FALL OF CONSTANTINOPLE - Pandektis
(Eugenia Drakopoulou)
The archive of the Greek Painters after the Fall of Constantinople constitutes a research programme at the Department of Neohellenic Research, aiming to examine religious painting as an instrumental factor in the construction of Modern Greek identity.
It includes an exhaustive record of the painters from 1450 to 1830, their biographical details as well as an index of their works (portable icons or church frescoes).
The project of generating such an archive was conceived by Manolis Chatzidakis, a Byzantinist and a member of the Academy of Athens. Research on this project within the framework of the Department of Neohellenic Research began in 1984 with the collaboration of the archaeologist Eugenia Drakopoulou who is now the director of the programme. The art historian Vassiliki Dimitropoulou, the computer operator Kelly Angeli and the computer technician Ioannis Pelekoudas, all contributed to the generation of the database of Pandektis. In a previous stage this program had the benefit of the contributions of Vassilis Georgiou, computer technician and Mirto Veikou, archaeologist.
